Crocheting/knitting/tatting it is easiest to do so when one controls the yarn or thread ball or spool, keeping it from rolling away from the handworker. Throughout the years there have been numerous types of holders to serve this purpose. They range from metal or plastics "jewelry" thread holders that pin to the bodice or hang from the wrist or waist-band (those hanging from the waist are referred to as chatelaines and those which hold the thread horizonally are often called spool knaves), to hard plastic, vinyl, fabric-colored, cardboard, wicker, wooden, and metal thread/yarn holders/containers hanging from one's arm with holes from which the yarn or thread is drawn. Other covered thread holders and "yarn bells" made of ceramic, glass and plastics, including tiny "Tat-its", were the precursors to today's artist-made yarn bowls which are made of ceramic/porcelain, wood, and even leather. There also are hand-made crocheted/tatted/embroidered-fabric thread ball/spool thread-holder wrist-bags.
