While crocheting/knitting/tatting it is easiest to do so when one controls the yarn or thread ball or skein. Throughout the years there have been numerous holders to serve this purpose. They range from metal spool holders that hang from the wrist or waist-band (these are often called spool knaves), to crocheted ball holders, to hard plastic cases, to tiny Tat-its, to much larger vinyl, fabric-colored, cardboard, wicker, and metal holders with holes from which the yarn or thread is drawn.
