    "I remember daddy kissed me, As he held me tight,
    He is such a nice big soldier, Gone off to fight;
    So I'm left with mother dearest, Since we couldn't go,
    Daddy said he'd trust her with me, That is all I know.
    Nurse says dolly's heart is broke, 'cause I never play,
    She must tell her I'm grown up, Working ev'ry day
    For I'm knitting socks for Daddy, and Daddy's men
    I can never think of playing, With my dolls again.
    Please don't think I'm such a baby, I am four you know,
    Mother says I'm such a helper, Since I learned to sew;
    Ev'ry day you'll see me sitting in dear Daddy's chair,
    'cause I think I'm nearer to him, When I'm sitting there.
    Hands get tired, then the stitches, Drop and run away.
    I call mother, 'Hurry quickly, Help me, help me pray,'
    For I'm knitting socks for Daddy, and for Daddy's men,
    I can never think of playing, With my dolls again."
