                          Knitting Socks for Soldiers who would soon be leaving,
                          Bashful Johnny Walker by her side, shyly trying hard to woo her,
                          drew his chair closer to her.
                          Faster, faster, flew her fingers ’round the stocking,
                          And her heart beneath her bosom starting knocking,
                          He was just to speak the word, no doubt,
                          But alas, her yarn gave out.
      CHORUS 1:   ‘Sir,’ said she, ‘Kindly wind another ball of yarn for me.’
                          Of course the thread got tangled, snarled and twisted,
                          Johnny still persisted,
                          sorry he assisted,
                          Sally smiled, ‘Have a heart dear boy,’ she softly cried,
                          And then this love sick youth at once replied,
                          ‘I’ll have yours, dear girl, we’ll go thru life together,’
                          Then they both soon forgot their ball of yarn,
                          Forgot their little ball of yarn.
      VERSE 2:     Pretty Mrs. Walker, who was once Miss Warner,
                          Sitting at her knitting in the same old corner,
                          Johnny so uneasy by her side, Very busy shyly scheming,
                          how to keep a date that ev-‘ning.
                          Finally says, my dear I must no longer tarry,
                          Got to go and see a sick pal, Billy Barry.
                          Tho’t that he was getting by, no doubt,
                          But alas, her yarn gave out.
